Cycles of My Life

A Journey Through Seasons and Renewal

Debbie Irvine

Healing, but not yet fully healed

Both as the Wounded and the Healer

Moving forward from Summer into Autumn, through Winter and into Spring

I journey also through the seasons of my Soul, Body, Mind and Spirit

Watching and waiting for transformation, for new Life to emerge.

As I come to the end of my yearlong journey and look back

Reflecting on my many points of inspiration and dejection,

Encounters and joining with my fellow wounded-travellers,

I reach a new synthesis, unexpected but exciting

Emerging from soil that was not recognized consciously as being so rich and fertile.

But which, by way of careful ministrations and tending,

Has unbidden, burst forth the nascent shoots and promises of

New Life

To look forward to once again.

(D. Irvine Spring 2016)

I share these verses with the hope that they may resonate with others who find themselves navigating their own cycles of change. If, in reading this poem, you recognize echoes of your own journey—moments of inspiration, dejection, or unexpected growth—I invite you to reflect alongside me.

What follows is a brief reflection on how this poem came to be, and why its themes of transformation and renewal are central not only to my work and personal growth, but perhaps to yours as well.

It speaks about The Shamanic Cycles of Life – Birth, Initiation, Death, Transformation, and Rebirth – which are present every day, week, month, and year of our lives. We are wise to remember that all cycles rotate through changes. Sometimes, we cannot see the bigger picture or benefit from hindsight, which need space and time to develop between the present—where we may feel stuck—and the past, which offers reflective insights and growth.

Recognizing this process can help us remain patient and hopeful during challenging times, trusting that growth and understanding will come with time.
